O'Mara's first love was ruby, but after suffering an injury during one of the games he was side-lined and decided to turn his hand to acting. Once he auditioned for a school play and he never looked back. In pursuing a creditable career in acting, he attended Trinity College in his hometown. Armed with a BA in Drama and Theatre, he relocated to London. Not even O'Mara knew the amount of success was installed for him.

O'Mara started out in theatre, which led to major roles in London and Dublin. Major roles included Popcorn, The Homecoming and Bash. For his performance in Bash, O'Mara was nominated the Best Supporting Actor in 2002 by the Irish Theatre Awards.

The heartthrob then moved to television, where he was featured in several BBC productions, which includes Playing the Field, Berkeley Square, High Stakes and Monarch of the Glenn.

With creditable roles underneath his belt, O'Mara set off to the US in 2002 and was offered the role in TV pilot, Eastwick – which didn't take off. However more roles were on the way to the Irish charmer, as he appeared in CSI: Miami, The Closer, Presidio Med and Criminal Minds.

Before his big move to the US, O'Mara was in Steven Spielberg's Band of Brothers (broadcast on HBO) and The Agency shown on CBS. More recently, O'Mara appeared on ABC's remake of the BBC's series, Life on Mars. He currently portrays main character, Jim Shannon in Fox TV's series, Terra Nova.

O'Mara now considers LA as his home, as he became an American citizen in 2009. In 2003, he married American actress, Paige Turco. The couple have one child. The trio divide their time between LA, New York and O'Mara's place of birth.
