Born May 22, 1958 in Tynemouth, Northumberland, England, she is an English actress, dancer and television presenter. As an actress, she is best known for her roles as Natalie Barnes in Coronation Street and Steph Haydock in Waterloo Road. She is also known for her appearances as a regular panelist on the ITV lunchtime chat show Loose Women from 1999 until October 2013. Welch was a contestant on Dancing on Ice in January 2011, where she competed with professional skater Matt Evers. She also appeared in the ITV celebrity dancing show Stepping Out, with her husband Lincoln. At the age of 17, she contemplated going to a teacher training college, but took the advice of her father and drama teacher and applied to the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London, where she attended from 1976 to 1979 and earned her Equity Card.

In January 2012, Welch was crowned the winner of the ninth series of Celebrity Big Brother. A self-confessed alcoholic Welch has also suffered from depression, which was exacerbated by the birth of her first child. She tried to commit suicide by attempting to jump out of the window of her flat, and subsequently fell into a bout with alcoholism and drug abuse. In April 2010, her autobiography Pulling Myself Together was published, in which she describes how she overcame her problems with alcohol, drugs and depression. Her book became a best-seller in the UK. In January 2012, Welch was crowned the winner of the ninth series of Celebrity Big Brother.
