Robert Gillam earned his Bachelor of Science from Wharton School of Business in Pennsylvania, and then went on to earn his M.B.A. from the University of California-Los Angeles in the 60s. His first professional work was with the firm, Foster and Marshall. He served as their first Vice President, and then moved on to Alaskan government. He became a member of the Alaska State Investment Advisory Committee in the mid 1970s. In the early 80s, he was a made a general partner at the investment banking company, Boettcher and Company, and subsequently founded McKinley Capital, a successful Alaskan investment firm. He made headlines when he gave $2 million to the conservative organization, Americans for Job Security, and then had them investigated by the Alaska Public Offices Commission, when it became clear that his funds were being funneled to another non-profit, for a different purpose.
