David Shaw is an American computer expert and biochemist who has a net worth of $7.5 billion. David Elliot Shaw was born on March 29, 1951. He made his fortune as the founder of the hedge fund D.E. Shaw & Co., which employs mathematical computer-driven algorithms for securities trading. His firm is a pioneer in high-speed quantitative trading, thus Shaw is known as "King Quant". After graduating from the University of California, San Diego, he earned a PhD from Stanford University. Next he joined Columbia University's Department of Computer Science, where he made research in massively parallel computing.
After six years, Shaw started to work for Morgan Stanley, and two years later, he launched his own firm, D.E. Shaw & Co. Today his fund has $55 billion in assets under management. He was twice appointed to the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, first by President Clinton (1994) and second by President Obama (2009). Since 2001, Show turned his work to scientific research in computational biochemistry. He currently serves as the Chief Scientist of D.E. Shaw Research.
