One of the richest people in India, Joy Alukkas is the Managing Director of Joyalukkas India Limited and Chairman of Joyalukkas Jewellery LLC, Dubai, a gold and diamond retail jewelry chain. He first entered the jewelry business as a teenager when he opted to drop out of school in 1987 to go to the Gulf and open the family's first jewelry store in Abu Dhabi. More than a decade later, he branched out opening an eponymous jewelry chain, the $1.35 billion (sales) Joyalukkas.
With headquarters in Cochin, South India, it operates 85 stores in India and the Middle East. In addition to the prominent jewelry chain, Alukkas also holds interests in a luxury air charter, currency exchange companies as well as in Jolly Silks, a renowned Silk firm under Joy Alukkas Group of companies. Most recently, he has reportedly bought one more aircraft called an Embraer Phenom 300, meant for his Joy Jets, an air charter that is much in demand from India's politicians and tycoons.
