John Arrillaga was an American real estate mogul and philanthropist who had a net worth of $2.5 billion at the time of his death in January 2022. John Arrillaga was one of Silicon Valley's largest landowners. He owned more than 20 million square-feet of commercial real estate in Silicon Valley.

He was born to a family of Basque descent on April 3, 1937. Arrillaga attended Stanford University on a basketball scholarship where he a member of Delta Tau Delta college fraternity. Upon graduating in the 1960s, Arrillaga united with Richard Peery to buy California farmland near Stanford University with the idea to convert it into office space.

Over the next several decades the two partners became among the biggest commercial landlords in the Silicon Valley with more than 20,000,000 square feet of property.

John Arrillaga made a number of generous donations during his lifetime, including giving $151 million to Stanford University which was the largest donated sum Stanford has ever received from a living donor. He had previously given the school $100 million. In honor of his donations, Stanford named several buildings after John and his family members most notably the alumni center and the athletic center.

John was married to Frances Cook Arillaga from 1968 until her death in 1995. They had two children together. Their daughter Laura Arrillaga is married to Silicon Valley legend, Marc Andreessen.
