Helmut Sohmen graduated from the Linz Realschule (Fadingerschule) with honors, then won a Fulbright scholarship at the University of Connecticut in the United States, eventually receiving his doctorate in Vienna. Before starting his professional career, he tied the knot with Anna Pui Hing Pao, with whom he has three children. Even though not having many years of working experience, Helmut interrupted his professional activity more than once to graduate as Master of Comparative Law and a Master of Laws. Before moving with his family to Hong Kong in 1981, they stopped by in Bermuda (1974) and London (1977). Five years after settling in Hong Kong, he became a CEO and shareholder of Dragon Air. While in 1986, he was named both a chairman and president of World-Wide Shipping Group. Ever since he remained with the company that acquired a majority stake in Norway's Bergesen fleet in 2003, when it was also renamed as shipping empire-Bergesen Worldwide (BW).
