Born in Mozelos, Santa Maria da Feira, Americo Amerim owns 50% of Corticeira Amerim. Corticeira Amerim is a cork manufacturing company that was started by Mr. Amorim's grandfather in the late 1800's, and has since grown to become the world's largest cork producer. The company is currently worth nearly $650 billion. Formerly the CEO, Americo Amerim no longer helms the company, and instead focuses on managing the company's various real estate and tourism investments. He has also invested a large portion of his personal wealth in a number of banks, in various energy companies, including Galp, Portugal's former state-run energy group, and he owns 25% of Tom Ford. He is married to the daughter of a prominent Portuguese doctor, and has three daughters of his own. He was given an honorary doctorate from St. John's University in 2009.
