Airat Shaimiev is a Russian businessman who has a net worth of $1.1 billion. New to the billionaire circles, Mr. Shaimiev is co-owner of the TAIF Group, a Russian holding company that controls 96% of the petrochemical, chemical, gas and oil industries in the Republic of Tatarstan. Founded in 1995 with headquarters in Tatarstan's capital Kazan, the company has 67 subsidiaries and owns several oil refineries, two gas station chains, as well as a number of chemical factories, construction companies and power plants.

It was during Russia's privatization in the mid-90s that TAIF became a major shareholder in most of its companies. In addition to TAIF, Shaimiev serves as CEO of Tatautodor, which is appointed to construct and repair roads in Tatarstan. A passionate race car driver, Airat Shaimiev won a European competition called Autocross three times, i.e., in 2002, 2004 and 2005.
