Richard Branson was born in Blackheath, London, and began selling records at reduced prices by advertising in The Student Magazine while he was in school. By the early 70s, he'd launched his own shop on Oxford Street, and Virgin Records was born. He then rented an estate and built a recording studio, which he leased to various musicians. Virgin Records soon began signing acts, including Mike Oldfield, whose 1973 album, "Tubular Bells", became a hit. More groups followed, including, the Sex Pistols and Culture Club. From there, he launched his own series of airlines including Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Express, Virgin Nigeria, and Virgin America. He merged with the UK-based communications provider NTL in 2006 to form Virgin Media, and also launched Virgin Galactic, a space exploration company and Virgin Fuels, a company devoted to finding alternative fuel sources.
