He then spent two years serving in the Army in Vietnam. After returning to the United States, he began working for Chevron Oil Company as a petroleum engineer. He joined the family business, the Yates Companies, in the early 70s. He went on to become President of Yates Drilling Company and the Executive Vice President of Yates Petroleum Corporation. He is the richest individual in New Mexico. In addition to his work with Yates, he also serves on the boards of multiple banks, colleges, and energy coalitions. He is also the Chairman of the Management Committee of Artesia MainStreet.
