The IFFHS International Federation of Football History and Statistics named him Football Player of the Century, after a vote in 1999. Also in 1999 Pele was named the "Athlete of the Century" by the International Olympic Committee, his career statics are 760 official goals, 541 in league championships, in total he scored 1281 goals in 1363 games. Pele was born Tres Coracoes, Brazil, the son of Fluminense footballer Dondinho, he grew up in poverty. In his native home of Brazil he is considered a national hero, he is well-known for his accomplishments and contributions to the game of football. In addition he is a vocal supporter of policies to improve the social conditions of the poor, AKA "The King of Football" (O Rei do Futebol), "The King Pelé" (O Rei Pelé) or simply "The King" (O Rei). At the young age of fourteen Pele joined the Bauru Athletic Club juniors in Bauru, São Paulo, the year was 1954. Then at 15 he began playing for the Santos, after he caught the eye of football star Waldemar de Brito. He joined the national team at 16 and won his first World Cup when he was only 17. Santos won the most prestigious club competition in South American football the Copa Libertadores in 1962 and 1963. Pelé retired from Brazilian club football in 1972 after completing 17 seasons with Santos, later in 1975 he came out of semi-retirement to sign with the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League (NASL). In 1966 he married Rosemeri dos Reis Cholby the couple divorced in 1978, they have two daughters and one son. He is currently separated from his second wife psychologist and gospel singer Assíria Lemos Seixas, they have one set of twins, one boy and one girl.
