Born in Moscow, Russian Federation, Nastia Liukin, also known as Anastasia Valeryevna Liukin, moved to the United States with her parents, both former gymnasts, when she was two. She grew up in New Orleans, and then Texas. She began taking gymnastics lessons before she began kindergarten, because she was always hanging around the gym where her parents were coaches. She quickly showed natural ability, and by the early 2000s, was dominating multiple events. She won three gold medals at Junior Nationals in 2003 and 2004. Though her scores were excellent at Juniors, she was not yet old enough to compete at the senior level, and would have to wait to participate in the Summer Olympics. She won the Senior National Championships in 2005 and 2006, and then struggled through multiple injuries for the next few years. In 2008, she won five medals at the Beijing Olympics, tying the record set by Mary Lou Retton and Shannon Miller.
