He played college ball at the University of Iowa where he forced three fumbles in his last game. Sanders was drafted in the second round by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2004 NFL Draft. He played for the Colts from 2004 until 2010.

In 2007 Sanders was named AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year, GMC Defensive Player of the Year, AFC Defensive Player of the Year, and PFWA Defensive Player of the Year. He finished his career with over 300 tackles.
