Heartburn is a 1986 drama film directed by Mike Nichols. The screenplay by Nora Ephron is based on her semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, which was inspired by her tempestuous second marriage to Carl Bernstein and his affair with Margaret Jay. Rachel is a food writer at a New York magazine who meets Washington columnist Mark at a wedding and falls in love with him. They get married, buy a house, have a daughter, and Rachel believes they are living a fairy tale ending until she discovers her husband is having an affair. This is Nicholson and Streep's first film together, later starring in 1987's Ironweed. New York City food writer Rachel Samstat and Washington, D.C. political columnist Mark Forman meet at a mutual friend's wedding and, after a whirlwind courtship, they marry, despite Rachel's reservations.
