Goodfella Robert De Niro is set to play another real-life career criminal in a movie. He's played Al Capone in "The Untouchables", Sam "Ace" Rothstein in "Casino" and Jimmy Conway in "Goodfellas", all based on real-life gangsters. This time he's left the Mafia for Wall Street and is set to play financial fraudster Bernie Madoff.

The Bernie Madoff will be joint production of HBO and De Niro's Tribeca Productions which has produced such films as "Meet the Parents" and "Wag the Dog". HBO and Tribeca Productions have already bought the rights to two Bernie Madoff books to base the film on along with a "60 Minutes" interview. The books being used are "Truth and Consequences: Inside the Life of the Madoff Family" by Laurie Sandell, which was written with the help of Madoff's son Andrew and "The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust" by Diane Henriques. John Burnham Schwartz has been tapped for the the screenplay. His previous credits include the novel "Reservation Road" which was turned into a feature film starring Joaquin Phoenix and Jennifer Connelly.
