As I was setting out to write this article I tried to think of one useful function that the penny performs in society today. All I could come up with was those machines at amusement parks that turn pennies into flat stamped souvenirs. Even homeless people will give you a dirty look if you try to slip them a handful of the copper coins. Not only are pennies useless, but they are also economically inefficient.
